Having heard of Prensky’s theory about digital immigrants and digital natives, I was interested to hear more of White’s take on digital residents and digital visitors. Given the extensive presence that some of my friends have online, it is not hard to see why White conceives of some people as “residents”: that is, people who see the Web as a space and have an ongoing presence there (White, 2013). If a Twitter feed or blog were to be printed out for example, some people would have a very large stack of paper, confirming their presence on the Internet as extensively as we have water bills and other mail testifying to our ongoing geographical presence at a house.

With the advent of the Internet, on which people can look up libraries of information with just one click, and the advancement of mobile technology where people can find that information anywhere, our ways of learning have changed. News outlets, corporations… everyone must change accordingly. Why, then, do our schools still attempt to undertake information the same way that they did 150 years ago (Richardson, 2012)? If school is just about imparting information that students can find on Google, why would they go to school?
